Canadian evidence linked acidification to long-range transport of sulphur dioxide from other countries, including the United States.
For Canadians, acid rain was a hard lesson in geography: air has no border. In the 1970s, scientists linked the acidification of Canadian lakes and waters to sulphur dioxide carried long distances from sources outside Canada—especially the United States—along with pollution produced at home. The issue helped lead to the 1991 Canada–United States Air Quality Agreement, one of the most important examples of practical environmental cooperation between our two countries.
What acid rain is—and why it travelled
Acid rain, more accurately called acid deposition, forms after sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are released by sources such as coal-fired power plants, industrial facilities and vehicles. Wind can carry these gases and the particles made from them hundreds or thousands of kilometres. In the atmosphere they react with water, oxygen and other chemicals, forming sulphuric and nitric acids. The pollutants reach the ground as rain, snow, fog, gases or particles.

What was harmed in Canada
Lakes, streams and fish
Where soils and bedrock could not neutralize the acidity, lakes and streams became more acidic. That can make water unsuitable for sensitive fish and other aquatic life, and can release aluminum from soils into water—another stress on fish. The most vulnerable places were not every lake or forest, but areas with thin, poorly buffered soils.
Forests and soils
Acid deposition can leach important nutrients from forest soils, mobilize aluminum that can harm plant roots, and injure sensitive foliage or needles. It was a serious concern for forest ecosystems in eastern Canada, particularly where geology offered little natural protection. Acid rain was one stress among others—weather, insects, disease and land use also affect forest health.
Buildings and heritage
Acidic pollutants also corrode metals and can accelerate deterioration of stone, paint and other materials. The environmental cost was therefore felt in natural landscapes as well as in communities and public infrastructure.
Children’s lungs: an important distinction
It is not accurate to say that ordinary contact with acid rain itself directly “burned” children’s lungs. The health concern is the air pollution that creates acid deposition: sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, fine particles and ground-level ozone can irritate the respiratory system and worsen conditions such as asthma. Children are especially vulnerable to air pollutants because their airways are smaller and they breathe more air relative to body size. This was, and remains, a public-health reason to reduce the same emissions that cause acid rain.

From dispute to cooperation
Scientific evidence of acidified aquatic systems mounted in North America. Canadian research in the 1970s identified long-range, cross-border transport of pollution as part of the problem.
Acid rain became a major Canada–U.S. environmental and diplomatic issue. Canada established the Eastern Canada Acid Rain Control Program, while the United States strengthened controls through the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.
The Canada–United States Air Quality Agreement was signed. Its Acid Rain Annex set out commitments for both countries to reduce SO2 and NOx emissions.
Both countries report large reductions in these pollutants and major decreases in sulphate and nitrate deposition across the eastern half of North America. Sensitive ecosystems can recover slowly, so monitoring and pollution control still matter.
The fair historical conclusion
American industrial and power-sector emissions were an important part of the acid-rain burden that reached Canada; Canadian emissions also contributed to a problem that crossed in both directions. The lesson is not that present-day Americans should be blamed for the past. It is that pollution ignored borders, and that Canadians were right to insist on accountability, science and a shared solution. The agreement that followed proves cooperation can protect both countries.
