The short answer

The video identifies several genuine weaknesses, but it overstates its case. Americans are not naturally less intelligent. The more defensible argument is that parts of the American education, political and media systems make careful reasoning harder—and distribute the opportunity to learn it very unequally.

The creator gives a strong definition of critical thinking: examine a claim before accepting it, investigate its source, ask who benefits, test whether the evidence supports the conclusion, and change your mind when the evidence requires it.

However, parts of the video then rely on sweeping generalizations, emotionally charged comparisons, selected historical examples and claims of deliberate design that are not fully demonstrated.

A critique of weak critical thinking must itself be examined critically.

Where the video is convincing

Strong point

Critical thinking is not the same as intelligence

A person may be intelligent yet accept a claim because it supports a political identity, religious belief, fear or financial interest. Critical thinking requires a method, not merely a high IQ.

The United States has no federally controlled national curriculum. States and communities establish schools, curricula and graduation requirements. This permits innovation, but it also creates major differences between locations.

High-stakes testing changes teaching

When schools are judged primarily through measurable reading and mathematics results, teachers face pressure to concentrate on tested material. Essays, debate, art, civics and open-ended inquiry are harder and more expensive to assess.

Education does not end at graduation. Political advertising, partisan media and engagement-driven social platforms can reward certainty, anger and group loyalty more than careful analysis.

Students in prosperous communities may receive advanced science, laboratories, debate and extensive writing instruction. Under-resourced schools may struggle with basic literacy, absenteeism, staffing and classroom stability.

Patriotism can discourage questions

Flags, pledges and military ceremonies do not automatically prevent reasoning. But when disagreement is treated as disloyalty, citizens may react emotionally before examining the evidence.

Overstated

“Engineered ignorance”

The video treats two centuries of education as a continuous plan to suppress independent thought. Institutions can repeatedly reward obedience without proving that one coordinated project controlled the entire history.

Oversimplified

The Prussian-school explanation

American reformers did study Prussian public education. It emphasized organization, teacher authority and discipline. But reducing its adoption to a plan for producing obedient soldiers and factory workers leaves out literacy, teacher training, citizenship and universal schooling.

Unsupported leap

From policy outcome to intention

Showing that a policy narrowed curricula does not by itself prove that narrowing thought was its intended purpose. Critical analysis must separate motive, mechanism and unintended consequence.

Tourists and national character

Viral examples of rude American tourists are selected because they attract attention. They cannot establish how a whole population behaves, or whether Americans misbehave more often than comparable travellers.

False equivalence risk

Unequal historical comparisons

Comparing social or employment consequences in a democracy with lethal persecution under Nazi rule may illustrate pressure to conform, but it joins situations of radically different severity.

Missing counter-evidence

International results are mixed

American students struggle in some areas, particularly mathematics, but perform above the OECD average in reading and science. The United States also contains many outstanding universities, researchers and critics.

What international evidence shows

International evidence does not support the claim that American students are uniformly incapable of higher reasoning. In the OECD’s 2022 PISA results, American 15-year-olds scored below the OECD average in mathematics but above it in reading and science.

The OECD’s separate creative-thinking assessment measured the ability to generate, evaluate and improve ideas in written, visual, social and scientific settings. Singapore led the participating systems. South Korea and Canada were also among the strongest performers. This is important for two reasons:

The results do not prove that American education is healthy. They show that the video’s most absolute claims are too broad. The deeper American problem is unequal access to strong teaching and large differences among states, districts, schools and families.

How to think critically about this—or any—video

  1. State the exact claim.
    Avoid arguing with a title or emotional impression.
  2. Separate outcome from intention.
    A harmful result does not automatically prove a deliberate plan.
  3. Inspect the evidence.
    Ask whether sources are primary, representative and current.
  4. Look for missing comparisons.
    How do similar countries, groups or time periods perform?
  5. Test the causal chain.
    Did one factor cause the result, or are several explanations possible?
  6. Notice emotional language.
    Anger can identify injustice, but it can also bypass careful judgment.
  7. Search for counter-evidence.
    What fact, if true, would weaken the argument?
  8. Revise the conclusion.
    Confidence should change when the quality of evidence changes.

A better conclusion

Americans are not “bloody stupid,” and American schools were not created by one unified conspiracy. Nevertheless, fragmented curricula, unequal resources, high-stakes testing, anti-intellectual traditions, commercial media and political tribalism can combine to discourage careful reasoning.

The United States still produces exceptional scientists, researchers, journalists, entrepreneurs, tradespeople and public critics. Its central weakness is not the complete absence of critical thinking. It is the extreme inequality in who receives the knowledge, instruction, time and social permission to practise it.

Knowledge supplies the evidence. Critical thinking determines what the evidence means. Decision-making requires choosing—and accepting the consequences.

Source note: PISA creative thinking is related to critical thinking, but the two terms are not identical. It is included because it directly measures open-ended idea generation, evaluation and improvement; no single international test captures every part of judgment or decision-making.
